What exactly is Joe Girardi trying to accomplish by eliminating candy from the Yankees’ clubhouse?
Greta asked:
I just heard another story on ESPN about Girardi taking all the candy out of the Yankees’ clubhouse…and I’m just wondering (this is a totally serious question) what is he trying to accomplish? Is he thinking that cutting out candy bars will inspire the Yankees to win?

It will do the exact opposite.
He is retarded. They would have been much better off if Hank hadn’t let money get to his head and resigned Torre.
Cut out the Carbs ????
I think it is one of those “symbolic”, get-tough gestures…
If any clubhouse needed to eliminate high-carb snacks, it would be the Dodgers…..
He is only giving away the fun in the clubhouse.
Fewer cavities than the Red Sox.
If he can’t beat them on the diamond, he’ll beat them in the dentist’s office.
He is trying to make this team more in shape. Candy is a very fatty food. If you eat a good amount of it daily, which some players do on their off days, they could gain some serious weight. It might sound stupid but it will probly pay off.
Maybe, if they’re good they get a hershey’s kiss after a win. Now that’s inspiration to get it done.
But in all seriousness, I think that the Yankees eating too much candy is the sole reason the Yankees haven’t been winning. It’s pretty obvious isn’t it?
lmfao..I’d demand a trade, I need my candy every once in a while.
ITS CANDY (this isn’t disrespect towards you, just Girardi) Thats the stupidest thing ever. Does he think thats why they aren’t doing great? Wow.
Is he taking out the beer and tobacco too? All it’s going to do is upset the team – they’re grown ups and should be able to have a candy bar if they want.
its to have a better diet. but of all the things he can change there are 15 better things he can do. or maybe not. we arent in the clubhouse lol. how the times change tho, **** ruth his 714 hrs drinking beer smoking cigarettes eating hotdogs. now you cant have a baby ruth. gimme a break
apparently he mentioned something about being healthier.
not sure if it will inspire the yanks to win but there is nothing wrong with being healthier, then again, these are adults who should be in charge of their own diet.
maybe he is on to something …
I saw an interview with Girardi on YES before a game a few days ago and he said he didn’t realize that it would become such a big story, and that he just simply didn’t want guys loading up on junk food before games, since that’s unhealthy and thus cutting that out is better overall for the performance of the team. He also mentioned something abbout introducing healthier alternatives like trail mix or energy bars or something.
Personally I think it’s a little too much, like micro managing and going too far into the players’ lives, but I also think that it’s being blown out of proportion. I mean from his point of view, he just made a small clubhouse rule probably because he saw guys eating ring dings before a game once and thought that they could do better. Making a clubhouse ban on candy probobly wasn’t the best move, but it’s not like it’s a big deal to any of the players that they can’t eat candy, so, it is what it is.
Cut out candy yourself, and maybe your teeth will look cleaner and brighter.
I think he’s punishing the entire Team for Molina’s and Posada’s Fat *****….
I’m anti-yankee….but even I think Girardi is a dum dum for doing this. I don’t even think he’ll last the whole season.
lol I belive it was arods wife that demanded candy be banned frum the yankees dug out.bc tha stripper arod banged was names candy
If this is Joe trying to put his personal stamp on the Yankees…what a joke. It’s 2008, if these players have not been educated as to the dangers/benefits of every single thing you can put in the body by now then they have been under a freakin’ rock somewhere. This is truly over kill, and to think a few short years ago they were eating oreos and winning titles with one of the best managers in baseball…Hank, Hank, Hank.
In another interview he simply explained that he runs a tight ship with cardio work outs and it seems like the players appreciate that. The players(especially bruney who IS OUT FOR THE SEASON!
) have lost weight. Then he noticed a gaain in weight when he saw candy around. I think you can figure out the rest!:)
HOpe I HElped!
A previous poster said Girardi said in an interview that it was unhealthy and he just wanted to eliminate junkfood. However, maybe he thinks his players aren’t taking him seriously, so he just wants to show who’s the boss.
I agree… that’s that stupidest thing ever. What are they… 4 years old?!?! They should be able to have candy if they want, most of them are in their 30’s. I say leave them alone and let them have it. Pretty soon he’s gonna ban something else and really **** off the players.
But I did hear that a lot of players were sneaking in candy in the clubhouse. Haha… I find that one pretty funny.
It’s not the best thing to have a bunch of candy before you go compete. It does no good for you. Only healthy things should be in the clubhouse. Plus, he’s establishing an atmosphere of discipline and respect. Girardi is impressive.
You guys don’t get it do you?! Candy is the code word for PEDS!!!!! Come on now!!!
candy is a code name for roids
i say the guys is trippin [my word] , because yes candy is not Healthy but this guys are athletes and know what they need to stay in shape Girardi is acting like if he is the DAD which he is not
Candy is good and sweet dam i want chocolate at the moment
No and no and no. I think he was tempted when he saw his team eat candy.
Comon the red sox have a ice cream macine… in ther clubhosue well did… it was sotlen and removed? and place with
remery and don…
I’m thinking maybe they should put the candy back in the club house,Ever since they took it away everyone is getting hurt.
It’s called…………….the “Napoleon Syndrome”. As if the players don’t have enough to deal with. It’s enough that the Yankee players can’t grow beards and let their hair grow long. Now with the lack of candy……..we’re talkin’ candy here, not a game, not a game!!!…………candy! (My Alan Iverson impersonation!) does the little general really think this is going to make the pitching better or the lineup better or the defense better??? We’re talkin’ candy, not a game….candy!
Where’s Mantle and Maris when you need them??????
