How long should Michael Vick be in jail?

too fly asked:

I’m really against animal cruelty, no matter the animal. And as Robert Byrd said, this truely is “BARBARIC” and I quote him on that. I mean, training animals to be killing machines is so wrong. I think he should be locked up for life with no football career at all. I have a dog and I would just break down to imagine him like that. Michael Vick doesn’t have a heart. God Bless those dogs, they’re just innocent creatures.
The troops in Iraq can protect themselves with weapons, cuddleyleo, but what do the dogs have? They can’t do anything but obey their owners!! That’s what pisses me off.

Robert Byrd is hardly qualified–he used to be a recruiter for the KKK and didn’t think burning crosses was barbaric.

That said, Vick should get prison time, but IF he is convicted it is a first offense, and if he expresses remorse the sentence should not be overly harsh…I love dogs also, but I honestly don’t think this should be equated with taking a human life, although my gut tells me to lock him up and throw away the key….

Just as wrong as it is to treat animals as such is it to judge an individual.

Mike was brought up with an ENTIRELY different background than you and I. So much so that we can probably hardly fathom what he dealt with on a daily basis. What we are exposed to is what essentially forms who we are as individuals. Vick’s alleged crimes are a result of his upbringing and experience, not necessarily who he is as a “person”.

This is exactly why we need to be a more proactive rather than a reactive society. Squash problems before they have a chance to form. We do try to do this, but its quite a daunting task.

That said, I’m not quite the animal lover as you seem to be, but I from what I have heard what was done to those dogs is almost comically brutal.

It depends on how much is he involved..

Bottum line is Vick knows right from wrong. His upbringing be damned. Justifiying his actions by blaming his upbringing dumps on everyone that has made it out of that kind of enviornment.

If convicted (that has not happened yet), he should do whatever the penalty is for animal cruelty. Any kind of animal cruelty is “Barbaric”. I want to tell you right now that I consider myself an animal lover. Growing up we had Cats, Dogs, Rabbits, Gerbils, Hamsters, G-Pigs, Sea Monkeys, you name it we had it. My Mother still has cats and my Sister, a dog. What I do not like here is the amount of attention this thing is getting. It is taking the attention away from our soldiers getting killed in Iraq. Do you know their names? Are you breaking down for them? This is taking attention away from all the people we have sleeping on park benches and in cardboard boxes, eating out of dumpsters. I am quite sick of hearing about Michael Vick, getting attention like he went into a bank and shot up everybody. You say he has no heart, but where is your heart at? To keep discussing him, gives the dogs no memory, it only gives him something he does not deserve, our attention.
