NFL (National Football League) stated that the value of a Superbowl to a city is over $250 million in profits?

happy asked:

They say that they got this number from adding all the sales that the business gets from the fans, since the majority of fans spend over $500 each on Superbowl day. Many city advisors disagree with this estimate. What do you think? Do you agree that a Football team is a wise invest for the city, or just another business?

    Depending on the city.
If you bring another team to New York or Cali, then yes it’s a business.
But bringing a team to a city like uhh, Pittsburgh or Green Bay, that’s a wise decision as it gives the people something to hope for and love, and since they are smaller than the normal city, it brings them money.

Phish! I make that in a day, want me to make you some?

    That is true.
    I think the same.
The football team should not be able to invest with the city.

Well, I believe that anything that can help to boost sales for the NFL, can be helpful to the NFL as a business, and it can also stimulate the economy in some senses. I’m not surprised that a super bowl event in a city would raise $250 million. Its the super bowl. The fact is, it is a great part of the game itself, and its the part of the season that most cannot wait to get to. I think it can be helpful, but it also does depend on the city. Some cities may not have as high of a gross income because some cities just don’t have as many activities or spots to do fun things. For example, Arizona. Arizona isn’t a bad place for a super bowl to be hosted, but the problem is, there may not be many clubs or fun places for visitors to go to. So the income would be cut down in a city like that. Overall, I think it is good for the league, and good for the economy.

You’re kinda comparing apples to oranges here. You mention what a SB is worth to a city, then comparing that to the value of having a football team. The NFL statement of a $250 million in profits isn’t to the city the team is from, its to the city that hosts the game.

Think about it. The SB is an instant tourist attraction. Most of the people who attend the SB are not locals, so its all tourism, especially in a time of year when there may not be as much tourism. Most people won’t come in JUST for the game, as thats just way too hectic, so they’ll likely at least stay overnight, maybe the whole week. Hotels always will charge outrageous rates when a big event is coming, because they know they can. You also have restaurants making big money since you have like 80,000 people who have to eat. They’ll go shopping, buy SB souveniers, go and see any sights around town, so yeah, its a ton of profits for that city.

As for a football team in your town, I do think its a good investment, if you can get one. I mean, look at how many cities want one, and there’s just no teams to move and the NFL can only expand so much.

That number sounds reasonable to me. Every hotel and motel in the area will charge its top rates for Super Bowl week and every hotel within at least 60 miles of the game will likely be fully booked. Most rental car agents will be sold out. The downtown restaurants will be full for most of the week.

You do not need to have a football team in a city to host a super bowl you just need a stadium. Think Los Angeles.

As others have said it does depend upon the city. Some cities will generate more visitors because of the Super Bowl than others. A warm weather city like San Diego with lots of other world famous attractions (Sea World, the San Diego Zoo etc) will generate more visitors than a cold weather city like say Minneapolis.
